Humphrey was born to the Guiding Eyes for the Blind
and was raised by my brother and sister-in-law on a
dairy farm in central NY state.
He was returned for formal training in April 2001
and was in NY during the horrible 9/11 attacks.
I don't know exactly where or how close he was to
everything but from that point on, he became extremely
noise sensitive.
They worked longer with Humphrey than most trainees
because of his sweet disposition and willingness to
learn.
He was assigned a blind person but could
not recover from loud noises so he eventually was
released in October 2002.
My sister-in-law was the puppy raiser and had first
choice to accept him or he would be sold. She
arranged for me to buy him.
I was hesitant to have 3 dogs but Humphrey blended
right in, was quiet, friendly and so well trained!
His first weekend with us, he was in a costume party
for Halloween and never was hesitant.
He's been! to nursing homes, school, offices, on an airplane,
up and down escalators, elavators. He took it all
in stride!
I was planning on having him become a certified
therapy dog with me when he became ill.
It was right after his 5th birthday in January of this
year!
Everyone who met him, instantly loved him.
He was always quiet and calm, sweet and loving.
He loved playing with my 4 year old Lab and being
bossed by my 14 1/2 year old Beagle/Lab mix.
I'm just missing him so much. Such a gentle soul.
